Circus performers have long been known for their hair-raising and death-defying
feats. Yet nothing could’ve prepared a Rhode Island crowd for the
events that unfolded Monday, May 5
th. The Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey circus was dazzling crowds in
Providence, Rhode Island at a mid-day performance. One of their featured
attractions is a troupe of 8 acrobatic women, being suspended by nothing
more than their hair, in a configuration that looks like a beautiful chandelier.
This is the kind of dangerous and one-of-a-kind act that Ringling Bros
has made a name perfecting.
On Monday, the performers were suspended 35 feet in the air during their
performance when the metal loop that holds the entire contraption in the air
suddenly snapped, causing all 8 women and the metal framing to plummet to the ground below.
The entire and horrific scene was
captured on video (warning: it may be disturbing for some viewers).
All eight of the performers and one additional performer were hospitalized
and two victims were listed in critical condition. The performers sustained
severe head, neck, and spinal cord injuries, as well as broken bones and
lacerations. So far, 17 operations have been performed on the 8 women.
Miraculously, all victims are expected to survive their injuries, although
it is unclear if any of them will return to the circus after the traumatic event.
Federal investigators and local police investigators are still trying to
determine why the carabiner in the rigging malfunctioned and OSHA is investigating
whether any workplace safety violations could have caused the horrific incident.
Florida is a popular hub for a variety of entertainment industries, including
circuses, film and television crews, motorcycle rallies, plays and Broadway
shows, concerts, and festivals. In addition, Florida is home to numerous
amusement parks and theme parks offering their own blend of hair-raising
and death-defying rides and thrills. Yet when things go wrong, the results
are often catastrophic.
Victims who are injured in circus performances, stunt shows, rallies, festivals,
or at theme parks often endure horrific injuries. When a roller coaster
malfunctions or a motorcycle stunt goes awry, it often results in numerous
individuals who are injured in the blink of an eye. When this occurs,
you need a South Florida injury law firm with the knowledge and resources
necessary to tackle large, complex, and catastrophic injury accidents.
