Federal Safety Officials Investigate Possible Defect in Nissan Versa Coil Springs

In a statement released earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it will be investigating the risks of coil springs breaking in Nissan Versa cars. The investigation will focus on 130,000 model year 2008-2010 Nissan Versas.

Here are a few details about the investigation:

  • The issue involves front suspension coil springs that can potentially break while the vehicle is traveling at any speed. The broken coil springs can cause damage to tires and lead to blow outs.
  • The NHTSA launched the investigation after receiving over 90 complaints from consumers who experienced front suspension coil springs breaking without warning.
  • Many consumer complaints involved broken coil springs causing unexpected damage to their vehicle’s tires. In some cases, brake lines were also damaged.

Based on the findings of its investigation, the NHTSA may choose to expand its investigation, push Nissan to recall affected mode year Versas, or simply close the investigation without any further action.

Auto recalls have become alarmingly common in the past year. Earlier this month, Takata expanded its recall over defective airbags to 34 million U.S. vehicles, making it the largest recall in American history. In 2014, 56 million vehicles were recalled in the U.S. - the most to date.

Given the widespread attention to auto recalls, it is likely the NTHSA will devote its full efforts to explore the issue with Nissan Versas and protect potential victims from suffering harm caused by defective products. Our legal team encourages vehicle owners to take auto safety investigations seriously, and to never ignore recalls.
