A Dangerous Defect
Takata Corporation has faced widespread scrutiny and mounting lawsuits
for defective airbags that have been linked to multiple injuries and deaths.
While the underlying defect is still being investigated, automakers and
federal officials have stated that
Takata airbags can malfunction and rupture when deployed.
Officials have reported that when Takata airbags improperly deploy and
rupture during a crash,
vehicle occupants can be injured by flying shrapnel. These injuries can include serious lacerations and
disfigurement. There have also been reported cases of overly aggressive
explosion of the airbags.
Millions of Vehicles Recalled
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
millions of vehicles have been recalled throughout the country. Because
investigators have identified an issue involving
exposure to high humidity, the NHTSA has also warned that consumers in certain states may face increased
risks, including Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and states along the Gulf Coast.
In light of the growing number of recalls from auto manufacturers, the
NHTSA issued a
consumer advisory in October 2014 urging consumers who own vehicles recalled due to Takata
airbags to take their vehicles in for immediate service. Recalled vehicles
include a number of models from the following auto manufacturers.
- General Motors
