STOP DRIVING affected Toyotas

2/3/2010 - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood urges owners of Toyotas affected by the accelerator pedal recall to stop driving their cars until they can take them into dealership for repairs.

The Associated Press reported:

LaHood's warning came Wednesday in testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation. LaHood says his advice to owners is to "stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it."

Toyota's most recent recall in the United States affects 2.3 million vehicles with the potential for sticking gas pedals. LaHood told reporters earlier in the day that Toyota owners should contact their dealer immediately and "exercise caution until repairs can be made."

Derry Brown, Jr., 64, of Pakohee, Florida was paralyzed in the May 31st, 2007 accident on State Road 80 just east of Lion Country Safari.

The initial accident occurred two years ago when the driver of a vehicle that never stopped, ran a stop sign and cut off Mr. Brown, who was hauling a load of sugar in his 1998 Freightliner truck. “If Derry hadn’t decided to sacrifice himself that other driver would surely be dead,” said Falzone.
Paralyzed man grateful for settlement

By Christina A Samuels

Frank Roster is grateful.

Grateful to the jury that awarded him millions when he was struck by a drunk driver on State Road A1A in Hollywood and left a quadriplegic. Grateful to his lawyers. Grateful to the woman who married him after the accident, when it was clear he would never be the same man he was before that day in 1988. Grateful to his real friends, the ones who never left his side during the bad times.

And finally, grateful to the Florida legislators who, 10 years after the accident, and four years after the trial, gave Roster a $4.6 million settlement.

The bill awarding him the money - a necessity for every settlement over $100,000 against a state agency - slipped into law last week, little noticed amid the normal partisan battles. Legislators agreed with Roster's contention that the road was too narrow, bringing bikes and cars perilo...
