Possible causes of unintended acceleration include cruise control malfunction, throttle malfunction and pedal misapplication. For example, the gas pedal and brake were placed in an unusual position for American drivers in certain Audi vehicles in the 1980s. It was actually possible to press the gas pedal and move the car forward while applying the brake. In other vehicles, cruise control problems have been found. Vehicles have also been found with throttles stuck in the open position after accidents.
